Before the winter hits, you should make sure any needed services are taken care of if you're due for one, which includes oil changes, brake service, battery checks, alignments, and heating and cooling checks. For winter specifically, you're going to want to consider a few questions, the first is about snow tires. Should you use winter tires, or are all your all-season tires okay? It's a good question and one we get a lot around Grand Rapids. We recommend winter tires because you'll get more tread during those days when the road has snow or isn't cleared off, which leads to more confidence. However, all-season tires can be effective, too. All told, you should make sure no matter what type of tire you have that it's properly inflated to the right levels as air pressure is important in winter months.
Another question we get asked is should I undercoat my car? This is a rust-prevention measure, as rust can build up over time on vehicles exposed to winter weather. That's another answer that depends. Newer vehicles often have undercoating on them, but over time that fades. If your vehicle is prone to rust, it might be a good idea. In the meantime, keeping your vehicle clean, especially underneath, is important so salt and road buildup don't cause rust, and make sure you're parking in cleared-out spots, too.
